Europe according to the Dutch

Tuesday April 6th 2021 | 20:00 – 21:15 | Zoom |

Since the foundation of the European Union, the Netherlands have been one of the main pillars of the union. As a trading nation with the biggest harbour in Europe, the Dutch have a great interest in the open borders and free market. And yet, the Netherlands have often been reluctant to further European integration and prioritized the relation with the UK and USA over that with Germany and France. The Brexit meant the loss of an important ally within Europe and Euro-sceptic parties within the Netherlands can steadily count on 20% of the Dutch voters. What is really the place and role of the Dutch in Europe? What does the Brexit mean for the Netherlands and what can we expect in the future?

We will discuss this with dr. Marloes Beers, History professor at Utrecht University and expert on European integration and Ria Cats, EU correspondent for Financieel Dagblad.
