Medical Diplomacy: Chinese Investments in Zambia

It is no secret that the Chinese government invests huge amounts money and knowledge in the African continent. One of the sectors that is top priority for China is the medical sector in Africa. Even though this form of medical diplomacy is not something new, the COVID-19 pandemic made it more visible during the past two years. On one side the Chinese investments led to critique, on the other hand the investments may result in possibilities for communities in Africa. How do the Chinese investments in the medical sector influence the lives of African communities? How is the process influenced by COVID-19? And what do we see if we look at the bigger picture with respect to the agenda of the Chinese government? Together with Maggi Leung we will try to answer those questions by zooming in on Chinese medical diplomacy in Zambia.

Maggi Leung is professor of International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University. Within her work Maggi Leung focusses on Chinese transnationalism and impact on global development, including research in Zambia on Chinese medical diplomacy.
