Tuesday September 22nd | 20:30 – 21:30 | Café Hofman |
This evening we will discuss the world according to Nietzsche. Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most influential thinkers of the modern age and has written extensively about many subjects. Nietzsche is, among other things, well known for his analysis of nihilism, the topic of tonight. Nietzsche’s definition of nihilism is to refuse that everything that exists has value or meaning. This provides an interesting view on matters such as the truth. But it also raises questions, such as how should you deal with a world without values? How do you give meaning to your life when everything is meaningless? What does this mean for morality? Nietzsche sees the solution in people’s ability to become superhuman (‘’Übermensch’’), but what do we think of this?
These questions and more will be discussed with Johan de Jong, Professor in Continental Philosophy at Leiden University. In addition, as postdoc he is affiliated with the research project ‘’Nietzsche: Experiment and nihilism” at Radboud University Nijmegen.
This talk is free of charge! You can also join us for dinner beforehand. Due to COVID-19 measures we only have limited places!
