Senior scientist at NIOZ Andreas Haas will tell about the changes in coral reef ecosystems and the societies affected. As a consequence of accelerating climate change the temperatures in the sea are rising. This has devastating consequences for sensitive ecosystems like coral reefs. Besides that heightened concentrations of carbon dioxide lead to ocean acidification which dissolves skeletal structures of corals. The decline in coral health and proliferance can also have painful effects on the societies that rely on them for subsistence or tourism incomes.
