Intern – Business and Peace, Horn of Africa

The Conflict Research Unit (CRU) is a specialised team within the Clingendael Institute, conducting applied, policy-oriented research and developing practical tools that assist national and multilateral governmental and non-governmental organisations in their efforts to develop and implement more effective policies and programming on stability, development and rule of law in fragile and conflict-affected countries.

The Clingendael Conflict Research Unit (CRU) has an opening for an Intern for the team working on informal economics and conflict dynamics in the Horn of Africa (as part of the programme of CRU), from 1 February 2019-31 July 2019 (a six-month period). 

This internship focuses on local formal and informal economics in the Horn of Africa, with a particular focus on the economic dynamics underlying formal and informal institutions providing governance and stability, as well as individuals’ ability to establish a livelihood in such environments. 

Job description
Relevant tasks are:

  • Research assistance for projects on the Horn of Africa of the informal economy by gathering    quantitative and qualitative data and contributing to data analysis
  • Contribute to writing background material, drafts, and web content. 
  • Contribute to the visualisation of research findings in the form of infographics and data dashboards.
  • Assistance for the organisation of (closed) events as part of research projects and for the dissemination of research findings.
