Unveiling the Apocalypse

Tuesday March 10th 2020 | 19:45 – 21:30 | Instituto Cervantes Utrecht | Domplein 3, 3512 Utrecht |

Ever since evangelist John wrote the Book of Revelation, the idea of the Apocalypse has fascinated mankind. This idea that the world will one day end in a revelation of ultimate truth has played a major role in art and shaping our culture. But besides symbolism, the Apocalypse has influenced our way of thinking and our linear vision of time tremendously. Whenever crises such as climate change, immigration or war appear, the final doom is often prophesied. But where does this fascination come from and how important is the role of religion in this matter? And how do we see the idea of an Apocalypse reflected in society throughout time?

We will discuss these questions and more with Apocalypse-expert dr. Bert Jan Lietaert Peerbolte of the faculty of Religion and Theology of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

This talk is free of charge. Afterwards, there will be drinks at cafe Hemingway!
