Sunday 26 September is an important day for Germany, as on that day their general elections will take place. Merkel has previously indicated that she will no longer act as chancellor and will withdraw. It will be interesting to see whether Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) will, after decades of election victory, still hold their ground. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is doing well in the polls, with right behind them the Green Party. The upcoming elections are important for Germany itself, but also for Europe. After all, Germany is the largest player in the European Union. How will Germany fare after 16 years of solid and stable leadership? And what will new leadership mean for the European Union, and for the Netherlands? This and more will be discussed with René Cuperus and Wiebke Pittlik during our political café.
René Cuperus is a Senior Research Associate at the Clingendael Institute, strategic advisor at the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs and guest researcher at the Germany Institute. Wiebke Pittlik is chief editor of ‘Duitslandweb’ at the Germany Institute of the University of Amsterdam (DIA).
