The Art of Nudging

Tuesday February 16th 2021 | 20:00 – 21:30| Zoom|

Influencing behaviour remains an interesting topic. How do you encourage people to obey rules, measures or change their behavior? Especially during these times, when people are asked to adhere to many measures for public health, this is a subject that is discussed a lot. Having to keep distance, a curfew and wearing a mask are only a few of the measures taken over the past year. Some people seem to obey willfully, while others don’t. But what does it take to cross the metaphorical threshold before someone changes their behavior? And what makes you motivated to work on certain things?
Something that can help is a phenomenon called nudging. A nudge makes it more likely that an individual will make a particular choice, or behave in a particular way, by altering the environment so that people are triggered to favour the desired outcome. A phenomenon often used in the social sciences, but also heavily criticized as it sometimes borders on psychological manipulation. This and more will be discussed during this collaboration between SIB-Utrecht and C.S.F.R!

Laurens van Gestel is a promovendus at Utrecht University, whose’ research project focuses on the working mechanisms of nudging techniques. Bart Engelen is an Associate Professor in philosophy at the Tilburg Center for Moral Philosophy, Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (TiLPS) at Tilburg University (The Netherlands).

This evening will take place via Zoom! You can sign up with the following link: http://bit.ly/3qlIvve
