With the rise of the internet during the last 50 years, social media has found its way into all aspects of our lives. Whether we use it to stay in touch with friends from high school, share pictures of a nice vacation or watch videos, it has become part of almost all our daily routines. Especially during this time of social distancing, it seems of utmost important to stay connected online. This can be quite difficult to manage and there seems to be an increasing pressure on our online lives.
We all know the saying: sharing is caring. And with the rise of social media, this has never rang more true. But why do we feel compelled to share everything about our lives? How much sharing online is healthy? And most importantly: what are the up- and downsides of this world-changing invention?
We will discuss these questions and more with Rense Corten. He is professor Sociology at Utrecht University and expert on cooperation and trust in relation to social networks.
