May 5th marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and the end of World War 2 for the Dutch. Although the fighting was over, the crisis continued for many millions. After the defeat of Nazi Germany, some ten million people were displaced or on the run and it would take many years before some would see their homes again.
In 2014 it was announced that, for the first time, there were more refugees in the world than during the Second World War. The refugee crisis has caused turmoil in Western countries, where the debate on if and how to receive these refugees has been a main issue in politics for many years. Are there lessons we can learn from the aftermath of the Second World War? How did countries react to the refugee flows back then? How were displaced people received then and how did they return home?
We will discuss these questions and more with historian and migration expert Leo Lucassen. He is professor at the University of Leiden and author of the book ‘’Vijf Eeuwen Migratie’’ or ‘’Five Centuries of Migration’’.
