Fresh Eyes on Dutch Life

Tuesday November 10th 2020 | 20:00 – 21:30| Facebook and YouTube|

In the current day and age it seems like our whole lives are on online platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Every month over 2 billion people visit YouTube to watch videos for educational, but mostly entertainment purposes. In one click you can see someone living their dream in an exotic far-away place, living out of a van or learning another language. Through video weblogs or ‘vlogs’ you experience life as the silent best friend of your favourite Youtuber. But what about closer to home? There are a lot of part-time and full-time YouTubers sharing their experiences about living in the Netherlands. From exchange students, expats, to seasoned travelers, they all love to film the unique but also the more mundane parts of life. What motivates people to start a channel? And who watches all these videos? From videos comparing living experiences, to room tours, to the work culture of the Netherlands, no subject is boring!

As an expat living in our own lovely Utrecht, Ava Irani shares her views on the Dutch experience through her YouTube channel and personal blog. Her videos range from topics such as exposing things the Dutch do better than Americans to confessing the reverse culture shock she experienced when she travelled back to the United States.

The YouTube channel The Traveling Foxes is a collaboration of Natasha Villaroman (Nat) and Natalie Tarin (Nat). A nice balance of more cinematic videos and vlogs show off the beautiful destinations but also the less glamorous, but valuable lessons and experiences learned. As a Philippine expat Natasha shares currently her adventures in Amsterdam and other trips exploring ‘Old Holland’.

Every video of Jovie’s home, with Jovana “Jovie” Parades, has her famous invitation: ‘Won’t you come on over, kick off your shoes and stay awhile?’ She loves living in the Netherlands as a YouTube-from-home mom and she shares her many observations every week. Watch her videos to get a little peek into Dutch life and culture as she tours through all the 12 provinces and taste tests ‘oliebollen’ and ‘drop’!

As a student from University College Utrecht, Aila Dielemans shares her relatable vlogs and trips abroad. From videos sharing her everyday life during corona in the Netherlands to beautiful destinations inside and outside of Europe, watching her channel gives an interesting insight to Dutch life.

This talk will be livestreamed on our Facebook page and YouTube channel and will be accessible for everyone to watch. You will be able to ask Ava Irani, Jovana Parades, Aila Dielemans and Natasha Villaroman your questions in the chat!
