Don’t bring your raincoat: Drought in the Netherlands

Tuesday November 5th 2019 | 19:45 – 21:30 | Instituto Cervantes Utrecht |Domplein 3, 3512 Utrecht |

When you think of climate change in the Netherlands, themes such as sea level rise, increasing temperatures and biodiversity loss might come to mind. Even though these issues are very pressing, another extremely important impact of climate change is often forgotten. Have you ever thought about water shortage in the Netherlands? The answer to this question is probably no, as water scarcity seems an unlikely issue in a country with such an abundance of water.

Yet, as the summer of 2018 proved: drought in the Netherlands can be a surprising reality. But was this drought as much of a surprise as we think? And are we prepared for the future, with more frequent climate extremes?

This evening will deal with the issue of water scarcity and allocation in the Netherlands. Dr. ir. Niko Wanders is assistant professor at the UU, and expert on the field of drought and seasonal forecasting. He will explain how and where water scarcity can occur in The Netherlands.

This talk is free of charge. Afterwards, there will be drinks at cafe Hemingway!
